The programme (Active travel to school) Aktivno v šolo aims to support schools and municipalities in promoting active travel to school, which is important for children’s health, independence and their social development. Active travel to school provides the minimum recommended amount of physical activity and encourages education about road safety and for sustainable development. Children that go to school on foot or by bicycle are more fit that those who are driven to school. There is evidence that children who travel to school actively are in general more involved in physical activities. Besides they follow lessons with less effort. Promoting active travel to school is a measure that while connecting municipalities, schools, parents and children, implements the education on healthy lifestyle.
Its main three activities are assisting schools and municipalities with forms of accompanied school travel such as Walking bus and Bicycle train, encouraging independent active modes of travel, and giving support to schools and municipalities in creating conditions for active travel to school within a particular school area.
