We are celebrating World Habitat Day for the fifth time with an event called ‘Dan za prostor’. This year the event is organized for the first time in Maribor, the second largest Slovenian city, and is dedicated to celebrating urban grassroots initiatives.
Like in many cities around the world, these initatives are blossoming in Slovenian towns and cities in the last years and are influencing urban development in a very positive way, in particular in the degraded areas. To raise awareness about the existence and extent of urban grassroots initiatives and promote their positive contribution to urban development among the wider public and policy makers in Slovenia, our institute has gathered a wide editorial team and issued a publication and a web page called ‘Prostori sodelovanja’ / www.prostorisodelovanja.si. The main event this year is thus dedicated to the presentation and debate about the themes and cases presented in the publication. It is accompanied by the Jane’s Walk, which will lead the participants through some of the most interesting cases of urban grassroots initiatives in the center of Maribor.
The event will take place in Kino Udarnik, a community run venue in Maribor city center, on Monday, 6th October 2014, at 6 pm. Jane’s Walk will start at 4 pm in front of Kino Udarnik. An integral part of the event is also an informal gathering after the event in Udarnik Cafe.
